Key Facts about PRAIRIE DOGS
*Unfortunately Prairie Dogs currently exist on less than 1% of the Great Plains. They are found no where else on the planet. Scientists say if this downward spiral
continues then burrowing owls, mountain plovers, and black-footed ferrets may become extinct. The loss of prairie dogs means the loss of an entire unique ecosystem.
*Over the past 150 years Prairie Dogs have declined by over 95%. Sadly, declines continue today. In just the past 15 years there has been a 60-65% decrease of
Prairie Dog complexes. Five of the seven largest colonies have disappeared all-together due to poisons, human encoachment like development and shooting, and plague.
*In the last two years almost all of the 100,000 acres on Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, has vanished, this is more animals than all those that currently live
on the Front Range of Colorado.
*Nine species of wildlife are directly affected by the decline of Prairie Dogs and another 150 have some kind of symbiotic relationship with these keystone animals.
